Purina is Doing Our Part to Care for the Climate
Climate change affects us all. That’s why Purina has big climate goals—to help create a more sustainable future for all of us. Because current and future generations of people and pets deserve a climate conducive to adventure, play and—most importantly—life.
Net Zero by 2050
As part of Nestlé’s global Net zero commitment, by 2030, we plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent, achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Here’s How
Renewable Electricity in Our Factories
Ninety-five percent of the electricity in our factories comes from investments in solar and wind power. We plan to achieve 100 percent by 2025.
Sustainable Logistics & Transportation
We're partnering with our carriers to pilot trucks that run on alternative fuels, such as renewable natural gas, instead of traditional diesel trucks, and switching to zero-emissions forklifts, such as electric.
Supporting Soil Health
We’re supporting farmers as they transition to regenerative agricultural practices for better soil health.
Regenerative agriculture is a holistic approach to farming, which aims to improve soil health and fertility by restoring soil organic matter. This can ultimately help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting carbon sequestration. Regenerative agriculture practices like cover crops, no-till and agroforestry provide both the farmer and ecosystem with many benefits, including better soil water retention, increased capture of carbon (greenhouse gases) and enhanced biodiversity.
Partnering with Sustainability Experts & Our Suppliers
Partnering with sustainability experts like Truterra and Arva Intelligence and suppliers, including Riceland Foods and Cargill, helps implement sustainable practices on farmland in regions where we source our high-quality ingredients.
Purina participates in Truterra’s climate program, which helps fund farmers’ transition to regenerative practices for corn and soy crops from regions in which Purina sources.
Through an agreement with Arva and rice supplier Riceland, Purina is supporting farmer adoption of sustainable practices in U.S. rice production. These practice changes are reducing the climate impacts of working lands while also lowering water consumption on the farm. Arva’s agronomic optimization and carbon quantification platform helps Riceland’s growers make data-informed management plans, and Purina’s financial support of the climate-smart program contributes to local livelihoods.
Purina has also partnered with Cargill to support the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices across more than 200,000 acres of corn and soy farmland in the Midwest. This is estimated to reduce the carbon footprint of the Purina grain supply from Cargill by up to 40 percent of the next 3 years.
Maintaining Zero Waste Operations
We’re maintaining zero waste for disposal at Purina’s headquarters and 20 other Purina facilities.
Product Packaging Innovations
Our ultimate vision is that none of our product packaging ends up in landfills, but we’re not there yet. That’s why we’re designing innovative packaging, incorporating recycled content into our packaging and supporting efforts to improve recycling infrastructure so less packaging ends up as waste.
